Spend the afternoon with the upstate's legendary Jazz, R&B & Soul Drummer Sonny Thorthon. His class "Dynamics" will teach you to shape each musical note with intention, sensitivity and control. Sonny Thorthon is one of the South’s most intuitive and creative drummers, revered for more than fifty years as a first-call musician. Born in Washington, D.C., he was immersed in music early through his mother, Margaret Ball Thornton, a distinguished educator and the first African American woman inducted into the South Carolina Music Education Hall of Fame. Growing up partly in New York City and later in New Orleans, Sonny absorbed music at its sources and developed a close relationship with influential drummer Ed Blackwell, whose melodic, sensitive approach deeply shaped his own style. After settling in South Carolina, Sonny built a lifelong career performing with countless regional and national artists across formats ranging from organ trios to big bands. Known for his musical sensitivity, freedom, and melodic soloing, he remains a singular and gifted presence on the world’s drum set stage.
