The Importance of Tuning Your Snare Drum Every snare drum has its own unique voice. The wood, diameter, type of hoops, and snare wires all play a major role in shaping your sound. In this 90-minute session, you’ll learn how these elements work together — and how to fine-tune your snare for any style or setting. You’ll walk away knowing how to: • Identify your snare’s tonal “sweet spot” • Properly balance top and bottom heads • Adjust snare wire tension for crispness and sensitivity • Match tuning to different musical genres Our Facilitator Skip will walk through real-world examples and give individual feedback to help you dial in your perfect tone. Facilitator: Skip Strong of Strong Tech and Tuning has been playing and tuning drums for nearly four decades, performing on stage, in studios, and in churches since age eight. His musical journey began in 2nd grade with his mother’s country band, where he learned the value of professionalism and instrument care. Under the direction of Mr. Milton Owens during his school years, Skip developed strong fundamentals that led to teaching over 45 private students weekly at Phil’s Music in Mauldin and working with the Hillcrest High School drumline. His reputation for solid timekeeping and expert tuning opened studio doors, resulting in numerous recordings and a 1994 performance with Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde for a Gibson Guitars clinic. Since 1996, Skip has been the drummer for beach music favorites The Grand Strand Band, known for enhancing their horn-driven sound with his classic 1965 Ludwigs. He’s also spent over 20 years playing and tuning in houses of worship, emphasizing excellence in every setting.
